The Siam, Bangkok, Thailand

Set on 3 acres of premium river frontage, the privately owned and operated 39-room luxury features Bangkok’s most spacious suites and is the kingdom’s premier urban resort offering intimately private pool villas with open-air roof terraces.
Relish the exclusivity of dining or staying in one of four traditional Thai teakwood houses sourced by silk tycoon, Jim Thompson, and socialite owner, Connie Mangskau.
The overall setting reflects the period of Bangkok’s greatest grandeur, under King Rama V (circa 1853-1910), with Art Deco accents. The Siam was conceived by creative director and celebrity Krissada Sukosol Clapp, together with globally acclaimed architect and interior/landscape designer Bill Bensley, one of Architectural Digest’s ‘Top 100 Designers and Most Creative People’ in 2009.
With art in mind for the Main Residence, lead architect Khemvadee Paopanlerd drew inspiration from Paris’ Musée d’Orsay, stating that “My work is an expression of how I wish the world could be: serene, lush in natural beauty, yet quite simple.”

To emphasise this, a muted colour scheme of black, white, cream, grey and neutrals have been combined with natural textures such as wood, weave, leather and stone, not to mention sprawling gardens and verdant shrubs throughout.
It features 39  spacious rooms, all outfitted with plush furnishings, super-sized king beds and lofty ceilings. Each room has been individually designed with original turn of the century oriental artwork and antiques. In addition, to make your stay as relaxing and carefree as possible, each room is catered for by a personal butler.
Choose from 16 Siam or 12 Mae Nam Suites located in the Main Residence, adjacent to the spa and with convenient access to our gym, library and meeting room. Each Siam Suite features an Art Deco-style salon or colonial verandah, ideal for leisurely breakfasts and afternoon tea; whilst our Mae Nam Suites afford the most fabulous river views imaginable and come furnished with supplementary double sofa beds for families.
Retreat to an intimately private Pool Villa and bask in either Thai, Chinese or Colonial surrounds. Every villa is awash with lush internal gardens and features a private swimming pool and open-air roof terrace, perfect for private sunbathing, evening cocktails or tête-à-tête dining.
Succumb to the Siamese charm of Connie’s Cottage. This house was brought by boat downriver to Bangkok from the ancient capital of Ayutthaya by curio collector, Connie Mangskau, and her dear friend the silk merchant, Jim Thompson. Today it has been totally refurbished and equipped with the finest in modern comforts whilst keeping its distinctive charm.

Sri Panwa, Phuket , Thailand - the perfect hideaway

Sri Panwa, Phuket , Thailand
About 45km away from Phuket , Thailand
Number of rooms: 52

A cool hideaway with spectucalar views that go on forever
The winding drive is long, forested and punctuated by the call of howler monkeys, which makes touchdown at the main building – a soaring modernist affair – come as something of a jaw-dropper.

It’s a fitting introduction to a hotel that re-sets the bar for lavish treatment and luxurious surroundings. The 50 villas, with private entryways, glassed-in infinity pools and multiple sundecks, cling to the sunrise side of the peninsula edge and are arranged to deliver staggering, uninterrupted views
pool villas at Sri Panwa, Phuket
Pool villas consist of two separate pavilions: one bedroom and one living room/kitchen (a bit superfluous in a hotel known for its food), both with iPod sound systems loaded with requisite Cafe del Mar-type tunes.

Despite all the Thai design and in-room indulgence, the view is the real star of the show. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors make it easy to while a day away just lying in bed, watching boats move toward the small karst islands dotted across the Malacca Strait.

Spa: The multi-level Cool Spa in Majorelle Blue resembles a floating garden more closely than a spa. It’s a palace of relaxation best visited during the heat of the day.
Restuarants:  Baba Dining Lounge, which is probably all that needs to be said. Fiery pad krapao and a rainbow of curry types raise excellent excuses for that third cocktail or beer.
Best room:  Pool Villas
Best dish: Spicy chicken wings
Design credentials:  black-and-white striped outdoor upholstery, water features , and a cool orange and grey colour scheme
