Box 1-7 Modular Shelf

A modular shelving system that can be stored like a "Russian nesting doll", which in itself becomes a decorative object. 

Created by Finnish designer Pekka Kuivamäki, Box 1-7 consists of seven cubic boxes that fit into each other like Russian nesting dolls. The boxes can be attached to seven ropes of different lengths that hang from a single nail on the wall.

Kuivamäki's inspiration came from a variety of artists and movements, including the suprematism of Kazimir Malevich, the neoplasticism of Piet Mondrian, the minimalism of Donald Judd, and other avant-garde artists and movements.

Box 1-7 is more about finding elegance in simplicity, a truly unique concept in different ways. A shelf that can be hung on the wall from a single nail and constantly rearranged and a shelf that can be a set of decorative storage boxes which can be placed next to a wall or on a large table creating a stairway effect.

Tyndall Table made from Manitoba tyndall stone

Tyndall Table

This coffee table by Winnipeg-based designer Thom Fougere  based on the topography of Canadian prairies, has a  relatively smooth top made of Tyndall stone which is 3.8cm thick and  weighs 150lbs, (127 X 56). The relatively smooth planed stone  appears to float upon its thin supporting steel structure.

The stone is left unfinished to let the substances and casual wear  slowly degrade exposing fossil fragments and revealing layers of stories embedded within the material. Over time the accumulation of puddled water marks, a splash of wine and scribbles of past dreams will meld into the material's already varied past – creating a nostalgic condition.

Tyndall stone is commonplace amongst the Canadian prairies, and is an historic building material embodying a certain vernacular of prairie architecture and building practices.

He describes the coffee table as “the nucleus of a living space; the central object around which dwelling patterns revolve: living, drinking, eating, loving, making, sleeping.”

‘Kasaa & Kenno’ cardboard furniture

 Showroom Finland’s new ‘Kasaa’ shelf and ‘Kenno’ chair are made of a new kind of recycled cardboard. The sturdy yet lightweight material can be re-recycled as paper; water- based adhesives are used to create its sandwich construction.

Designed by Heikki Ruoho, ‘Kenno’ chairs are manufactured by using computer-aided cutter, with little manual work required in the process. Four pieces of cardboard form a robust structure with no need for glue or screws.

The series consist of three products: two chairs and a stool. The ‘Kenno’ small (S) chair is perfect for children as it can be personalized by painting or drawing on the surface and then discarded when the child has outgrown it. ‘Kenno’ (L) chair is the version for grown-ups.

With ‘Kasaa’ cardboard shelf by Teemu Järvi, numerous variable combinations can be created with two differently sized units that pile up to form a modular shelving system. Each unit folds up with two flat-packed cardboard sheets without the need for glue or additional fittings.

‘Montana Shelving system’ by Peter J. Lassen

Danish manufacturer Montana Møbler has launched a new, minimalist ‘handle-less’ model of its famous customisable storage system designed by company’s founder Peter J. Lassen.

The recently developed version encompasses ‘drawers and doors without handles [which] can be opened and shut with a light pressure on the front. The selected drawer and door models are available in all Montana’s 42 lacquer colours.’

‘Montana’s shelving system consists of 42 basic units that can be combined according to need. The main unit measures 69.6 x 69.6 cm and all other units are derived from these measurements. The basic units are available in four depths: 20, 30, 38 and 46.8 cm.
